Student Volunteer Movement
Just over a hundred years ago (1886-1940) there was an uncommon outpouring of workers for His harvest among college students. This movement became known as the Student Volunteer Movement (SVM). Over the next generation, 20,000 North American students personally committed themselves to the rallying cry of "the evangelization of the world in this generation."
These who consecrated themselves have set an example for us today. Jesus has waited thousands of years to come and retrieve His global bride. The baton has been passed to us. It's time to make our mark as a generation.
Student Volunteer Movement 2
In the same spirit, Student Volunteer Movement 2 (SVM2) seeks to call a new generation of message bearers who would abandoned themselves to the person of Jesus Christ and wholeheartedly devote themselves to proclaiming the gospel globally.
SVM2 had its first seeds sown during a discussion in June 2001 between Ryan Shaw (Director of SVM2) and Donnie Scearce (Executive Director for Pioneers Canada; chair of the Advisory Board for SVM2) on Fuller Theological Seminary's campus. Ryan's vision was to see college-age students challenged to a deeper level of commitment in global mission in a widespread manner. Donnie counseled Ryan that if he were serious about this he should probably spend six months or so doing research to discover what God is doing among students in the mission arena. This research was concluded by July 2002 and through it the impetus for SVM2 emerged.
In August 2002, a group of 8 leaders from various mission organizations and church denominations gathered together to seek God and together discern what "feet" could be put to the vision. During these meetings, the foundations of SVM2 were laid. Since this time, SVM2 has continued to expand through the commitment of students around the world and through partnerships with various denominations and organizations.
