Expectations
1. Language Acquisition
It is possible to get around Chiang Mai just fine without learning Thai. However, it is always best to familiarize oneself as much as possible in the language. The intern goal for language acquisition is to learn a few phrases and be able to potentially have very easy conversations. You will have some language introduction as part of the program.
2. Weekly Schedule
Each week is laid out with a clear schedule. You will be kept quite busy during the internship. You are expected to participate in every piece of the schedule as it has been designed to give you the greatest overall experience possible. This schedule includes courses, time in the prayer room, Bible studies, office hours working on SVM2 related projects, outreach and much more.
3. Housing
Interns will stay in provided housing. One house for women and another for men. You are expected to hold to the house rules and policies and treat them with respect.
4. Transportation – Getting Around Town
The provided housing will most likely not be very close to the office and the meeting areas for the internship. This will require each intern being shown how to get around town and then being responsible to get themselves to where they need to be on their own. There are times when the internship van will pick you up for various activities but the majority of the time you will be required to use public transportation for getting around.
5. Fellowship – Churches
There are several English speaking international churches in the city to enjoy rich fellowship with other believers and expats. These fellowships include English speakers who are missionaries, businesspeople, consulate workers, students from many varying English speaking backgrounds as well as some refugees from neighboring countries, etc. There are also many Thai churches that provide some form of translation that are worth visiting periodically.
